Since 1217, there have been a series of street markets located on the Rambla. These stalls in the open air were set up by farmers from the villages surrounding Barcelona who were selling their products in the city. The market was the meet up place for locals as they purchased daily fresh products.
Today, 800 years later, Mercat de Sant Josep de la Boqueria, has changed location to where there once was the Carmelite Convent of St. Joseph, which was destroyed by fire, right off the Rambla. The market is still a vibrant meet up place where locals and tourists go for fresh products and delicious meals.
There are more than 200 traders rolling up their blinds very early in the morning to be ready for visitors, Monday through Saturday at 8:00 a.m. Here you can find the finest products as well as international gastronomic delicatessen. Making a choice of what to eat is very hard, so take your time strolling around the place before making a decision.
If you are a food lover you can easily spend the day in this place. This is a great place to buy specialties, gourmet salts and olive oils for your cooking back home.
